04 July 2008 - paris weblog
oh la la.
i have been in paris since the day after my last joe jackson show in melbourne.... may 28.
for languid days of resting writing and ....fromage....
played a few shows in france supporting australian group belle roscoe.... just me and my guitar; travelling light.
paris is a wonderful backdrop for reflection. and we took an apartment in montmartre for a few weeks which was superb.... 5 flights up, no elevator, but sublime rooftop views and sacre coeur poking its head above the building across the street.... and a piano.
and the city of light didnt let me down... its light til about 11pm so you can walk everywhere at night and ride velibs around the town after the worker bees have freed up the boulevards.
velibs are free municiple bicycles you can pick up from stands all over paris and ride to wherever you like and leave the bike at a different stand - velib is short for velo (bike) and libre (free).
one sunday, when i was staying on rue de rivoli in the heart of paris, i was told i had to wake up - the normally noisy streets were all quiet except for the sound of hundreds of heavenly little bicycle bells - outside my window the were no cars but a parade of bicycles like some scene out of a wim wenders film. they are quite conservative the french but also eccentric and proud and have a wonderful regard for living well and .... eating well.
when i say 'well' i dont mean healthily. my appetitie for fromage, vin rouge, croissants aux amandes, les baguettes, yaourt, and les petits financiers framboise has been unquenchable; alas it shall only be my return to melbourne this week which i imagine shall bring me back to my senses.
yesterday i left paris for 5 days in bucharest, romania. so far i have not been so inspired by it as a city but the weather is hot and it feels a bit like greece or turkey. the only thing i have been craving like a lost lover is the ocean. i see pictures of it and it is as if i am heart broken.....
they say that travel puts you in touch with the infinite; and i like this idea. it is too soon to say how it has benefitted me, but i cant tell you how valuable it is to jump off the mouse wheel and be untethered ...
next week, i fly to home to melbourne to do some solo victorian shows in support of lior on july 10, 11 , 12, & 13.
from the stage, i shall try not to lament the lack of chevre and borgeuil, but sing as one who has dined well on life and whose eyes have been both on horizons far and close.
until then, aurevoir.

My new single It's Only Love "Desire Mix" is now out on iTunes
Check it out HERE
20 March 2008 - weblog #3
hi ho. full moon fever's got me going this week. i think its officially full tomorrow but it sure is keeping my feet tapping this week.... and today is the equinox.... where day and night are of equal length.......the 'it's only love' tour starts tonight at capers in hawthorn, melbourne. ...where did i put the fairy lights? ... just about to pick up my guitar from the acoustic centre where its been for a week being fixed. we performed on the set of neighbours a couple of weeks ago, and the strap peg had come out of my guitar so the crew made a make shift peg out of a pencil and cracked the bottom of my maton....
my new single 'it's only love', which i produced with tony buchen and which josh abrahams has now remixed for me, is out on itunes on march 24... just a buck69 will get you a slice of love...... i went to see the australian ballet's swan lake last night at the arts centre. that was pretty special. i wore lots of white tulle petticoats... gotta dress for the occassion.....that tchaikovsky sure knew how to write a movement. 3 hours went by in about 20 minutes....
im writing on the fly, so not much time for reflection today.... the flow of the river is too strong.. must let go of the river bank. happy easter bunny to you all... i look forward to seeing you when my circus comes to your town.

04 March 2008 - weblog # 2
they were the best of times... they were the worst of times.... the good and bad sometimes sit so close together dont they? i wont go into my personal weather patterns except to say life is long, but its also short. the theme of the week is 'say yes'..... i have a wise friend who i havent seen forever cause he doesnt have a phone or a computer or a car, but he always used to say to me "ab, say yes to everything and hope that they don't offer you tripe."
..... went to see feist last week at the prince of wales in st kilda in melbourne. the lovely emily ulman put me on the door. half way through the first song, i turned to my boy and said, "that's it. im getting me an eletric guitar". leslie feist had the coolest guitar sound. might even get up off of my stool sometime soon too... woohoo... she's got legs!... what else?..... did a very cool nashville stylee singer-songwriter in the round evening of song and stories in a cute bar in abbotsford called the idgaff bar on sunday night. me and abbie cardwell and jordie lane (you should check them out - they are so good) all sat on stage together and took it in turns to play one of our songs and tell a little story about them. it was quite something and we all revealed more than we intended. the audience really dug it. but we dug it a LOT . it was a treat to be onstage listening to wonderful story tellers and get insights into their relationship with music; little estuaries joining to make a river for a night.... then we drifted apart again....
i'm coming to sydney this weekend with my guitarist eden and my cellist, mal, to play at the acoustica by the lake festival at lake belvedere –bicentennial park, australia ave, sydney olympic park. its a free festival on sunday 9th, with music all day and we're on at about 6pm..... before that, however, i shall be in church as i have been asked by my oldest friend in the world to be her little girl, aurora's godmother.... big responsibility - i shall be her spiritual guide / or at least be the one to show her how to blow smoke rings...
i'm doing some rehearsals for my upcoming touring - which will see me play from eumundi to tasmania. i'll be doing some shows as a duo, some as a trio, some as a quartet and some as a 6 piece.... am really looking forward to it all....
my great friend, matty, who is about as top shelf a human as you can get, is having an operation tomorrow morning (wednesday 5th) to have a tumour removed from his brain. so if you could send some healing energy out into the universe to him, i'd be most appreciative.
wishing you all good good things.

21 February 2008 - News from the lady herself...
the inaugural weblog - by Miss Abby Dobson
i am currently trying to put a tour together for march and april with several different arrangements of musicians - duos for this, trios for that, full enchilada 6 piece band for that... today i have to learn how to play the classic beatles song, 'across the universe' on the guitar and learn the words off by heart to play tomorrow night at the collingwood town hall in melbourne. i’ve been asked to do a charity rockwiz show there for kids suffering due to substance abuse. the rockwizzers are a gorgeous bunch and I'd do almost anything they asked of me....
this week me and my band went to the set of neighbours and did a performance of my upcoming new single 'it's only love' in 'charlie's bar' that they filmed for the show. it didn’t take very much to convince my band to do this. and, in fact, after we were done, we all felt a bit flat because we felt like our career had peaked. 'where do we go from here?' adrian, my wurlitzer player, texted me. all I could offer him, by way of hope, was that there was always summer bay.
i’m also doing some delicious sleuth work on my 'making it big in france' project. hoping to hope that i can get to paris for a spell this june to play a few little shows and meet some folks about representing me there... i’m getting lots of emails from friends about where to play and such. this is quite exciting as i am so enamoured with the place and the language...and the food...
what else?... next week i’m going to be doing a nashville style 'in the round' singer-songwriter thingy with abbie cardwell and jordie lane who are both very cool and good and we're gonna take turns playing our songs and then telling little stories about them.... oh, you'll need kleenex a-ready for my stories. even you grown men.....
loving living in melbourne. every day is different. having a purple patch. and gratitude aplenty.
til next time... be happy ... abby
